What is the ideal body size/weight?
Well it depends on many factors: which century are we talking about, age, community.
In my opinion your healthy body weight is when you feel good, love yourself, have no health issues, no mobility limits with everyday activities (going up a hill or stairs, running around with your kids, etc.).
Everyone has met fat or body shaming in her life. We all heard you are too fat, too skinny, to tall, to small, too strong, to weak....
THAT NEEDS TO STOP!
The saddest thing is when children are shaming each other, or when "educated" health professionals, like doctors keep shaming their patients. Sometimes we as women tend to do it with each other not just face to face, but behind each others back. Nowadays the internet gives freedom and anonymity to trolls, who leave mean comments on others sites. It is also hard to deal with it and can lead more problems.
In our modern world obesity is a huge problem. We have too much food available, many of them highly processed, the variety is endless. Also healthy foods can be a bit pricy, but I'd rather spend money on my health as on medications.
As we get bigger and bigger with more and more food, on the other hand we get more malnourished. Our foods are so filled with addictive chemicals, and they are implementing in our brain that we need more. This is not just a big risk factor for us adults, but for many children. We are setting the future factors for our child even before being born. A soon to be mother who leas an unhealthy lifestyle sets the road for her baby to have insulin problems, heart disease from early on in life.
Obesity can cause inflammation, joint pain, glucose problems, vitamin deficiency, accelerates ageing.
THAT NEEDS TO STOP!
But does food addiction exist?
Yes it does. These processed foods are designed to make you go for more. Who ever ate only one potato chip? They are filled with extra sugar, salt, saturated fats triggering your hormone system and brain. If you look at the scan of a food addictive brain, it looks the same as a drug addictive brain. And the problem is that this reward feeling is not just turning on addiction to processed foods, but addiction to eating itself.
Who is interested in getting us unhealthy?
- Well first of all food companies, who have to sell their goods to the customer. How can you get more customers? Getting them more addicted to your product.
- Then medical systems, selling medications for the patients. But these are not solving the problems, just masking the symptoms, causing side effects for which you will need more medications.
- And last but not least the diet and fitness industry. Is there any person out there who hasn't tried any diet, supplement, miracle treatment, fitness plan? I don't think so. I have to admit I was a victim to them all too. Went through a ton of them to feel better, look better, until I had to realize only I can solve it, only the slow way, only with healthy foods and eating patterns. But we tend to look for the quick fix.
THAT NEEDS TO STOP!
Did you get overweight/underweight in one week? No? Then why would you fix it overnight?
Here are some tips on how to start:
- write a food diary and log everything you eat and drink. That can help if you see everything written down in one place and you read it back. You can recognize your eating patterns, if you are over or undereating, or you do both at certain times of the day, like undereating during the day, than binging at night. Also if you have any food allergies you can sort it out that way.
- start eating more veggies and fruits. the more variety the better. Try new ones, or new cooking methods to make them even tastier.
- change processed foods to more raw and natural form. Do you need four cups of orange juice? Would you eat that much orange (around 10 of them) in it's natural form? No because although it is sugars from fruit you probably don't need that much.
- add more proteins, if possible plant proteins to your diet. It helps to keep you satiated, and it breaks down differently in your body than animal proteins. Also plants contain fibres which help with digestion, while animal proteins don't.
- eat the rainbow. How many colours can you add to your plate in one meal? The more the better, as all colors symbolize variety of nutrients. The more nutrients you put in your body, the less hungry you will get. That is why you can eat chips, than chocolate, than popcorn, than candy and you still won't feel full with all those empty calories, because your body didn't get what it wanted.
- sleep more. It has got a high impact on your hunger hormones, if you are not sleeping enough or not well, your body will go crazy for carbs to keep and alive and awake.
